We all have different perceptions about marriages. Isn’t it? We often find ourselves wondering what marriage actually is? Is it just an agreement or a bond of love? As everyday we see many love marriages ending up with divorces for different reasons, whereas on the other side we have so many examples of arranged marriages which are going strong for years even without love — it’s pretty obvious to have these thoughts.

Dharma Productions latest offering “Jug Jugg Jeeyo” deals with the similar complexities of marriage. The trailer for the film promised a wholesome family entertainer backed with equal dosage of drama and comedy. And after my 150 minutes experience of watching ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ I would say the film delivers on it.

The story revolves around two childhood sweethearts Kuku (played by Varun Dhawan) and Naina (played by Kiara Advani) who are married and settled in Canada. After five years of their marriage, the couple who has been in love since fifth standard wants to get divorced. They decide to break the news of their separation to their families after Kuku’s sister Ginni’s (played by Prajakta Kohli) wedding — who too isn’t really happy about her marriage but doing it just for the sake of getting settled.

On reaching India for Ginni’s wedding, Kuku gets to know about his father’s (played by Anil Kapoor) extra marital affair with Mira (played by Tisca Chopra ) and his plan to divorce his mother Geeta (played by Neetu Kapoor) after 34 years of their marriage. Will Kuku be able to save his parents marriage along with his own relationship or the Saini’s will get separated is what forms the storyline ahead.

”Good Newwz” filmmaker Raj Mehta has directed the film and no doubt he has brilliantly presented the complications and complexities every married couple goes through at some or the other point in their life. Though the story is quite simple but the way it is executed with a good balance of comedy and emotional sequences, it has kept us connected to the Saini’s throughout. Raj Mehta seems to overwrite his films with a distinct yet surprisingly familiar style of making a serious topic accessible through humour and sarcasm, with an underlying thread of darkness in his characters.

On the performance front, Varun Dhawan as Keshav Saini aka Kuku, an emotional son and husband is impressive. Even though his character sketch is a little too similar to that of his Humpty and Badrinath, we loved him anyway. No lying but Kiara Advani is getting better film by film. Kiara’s Naina is an independent and career oriented woman who knows how to balance her relationships. The duo share quite refreshing chemistry on the screen.

Anil Kapoor as Kuku’s father Bheem Saini is literally the heart of the film. He is a kind of character who tickles your funny bones at one moment and the next second will make you go mad at him. His father-son camaraderie with Varun is good to see on the celluloid.

Neetu Kapoor returns to the screen after a long time as Kuku’s mother Geeta and delivers a heart warming performance. I’m glad she is not that typical punjabi mom Bollywood has been showing us for a long time. The scenes between Neetu Kapoor and Kiara bring out some of the best moments of the film. One like that is, the scene where Neetu’s Geeta shares wine with her daughter-in-law Naina on the lake side after getting to know about her husband’s affair.

In the supporting cast, there is social media sensation Prajakta Koli who makes a promising debut with her limited screen space. Maneish Paul ups the humour quotient of the film with his comic timing and perfect one liners. All in all a very impressive star cast which is one of the major strengths of the film.

“Jug Jugg Jeeyo” definitely has its own flaws, for example the music could have been a lot better and WhatsApp forward dialogues could have been avoided for good. But sometimes it’s better to ignore some flaws, just like we do in relationships. With everything said and done, ”Jug Jugg Jeeyo” is a typical Dharma masala film which definitely has the potential to entertain the audiences.

You can watch the film with your family at a theatre near you.
