India has a ton of mythological legends and stories, but still has a dearth of good horror series adapted into mainstream media. Our grandmothers have been talking of lonely spirits wandering in the night waiting to take away kids, ghouls wanting retribution for their unfair cessation of mortality, and countless other stories of the countryside horrors. Tapping into these multitudes of stories, we have Betaal bringing us a horror series.
Created, written and directed by Patrick Graham of Ghoul fame alongside Nikhil Mahajan and Suhani Kanwar, Betaal stars Vineet Kumar, Aahana Kumra, Suchitra Pillai, Jitendra Joshi, Manjiri Pupala, and Syna Anand. Betaal is set in Colonial Era India, where a group of soldiers are sent into a mountainside village to clear out the villagers to build a highway. In the process they unleash unspeakable evil. The trailer does a good job of keeping us on our heels. The story is about four Indian intelligence officials belonging to the Indian Intelligence Wing (IIW) who get caught before they can hand-off a significant snippet of data to India. They get caught and are going to be beheaded. A lot is on the line, and the show weaves its own narrative of horror and edge biting suspense to back the action and tension that follows. Betaal is action packed, and eerie in its own way.
Betaal has been produced by Red Chillies entertainment along with Blumhouse Television. It will stream on netflix on May 24th, and certainly seems like a bingworthy show.
