Ever since the teaser of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much awaited film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ starring Alia Bhatt was dropped, people have been waiting for the trailer to be released. Well, if you are one among them, the wait is over as the trailer is finally here and all we can say is it was all worth the wait.
Set in the 1960s, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is a biographical crime drama based on S. Hussain Zaidi book, ‘Mafia Queens Of Mumbai’, which revolves around the life of a girl named Gangubai, played by Alia Bhatt, who went on to become one of the most powerful women of Kamathipura.
Personally, I’ve been a huge fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s work. The standards which he has set for himself with his previous releases like Padmavat, Goliyan ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Devdas and Bajirao Mastani among others it’s obvious to have expectations from ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and by looking at this 3 minutes 15 seconds long trailer one can surely say he’s not going to disappoint yet again.
The trailer begins with people sloganeering against Gangubai but she walks like one true queen being least bothered about it. It shows her struggles from just another sex worker to how she fights against all the odds and transforms into Gangubai, a voice of power who wants to change the lives of women and children in the red light area.
Alia Bhatt is undoubtedly one of the most talented and successful actresses in the industry at the moment and with ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ she has just raised the bars for herself. She literally owns the character displaying all the shades of Gangubai be it emotional, fierce or funny as if she was tailor made to be Gangubai.
If there’s something which grabbed more attention than Alia as Gangu in the trailer it is the dialogues. The dialogues are so well written that it won’t be a hyperbole if I call them another lead of the film. And with Alia delivering it with so much passion it hits right where it is needed to.
The film not only marks the first collaboration between Bhansali and Alia but it’s also a reunion between Ajay Devgan and SLB after the 1999 superhit film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. Ajay Devgan will be seen in an extended cameo as Karim Lala, who’s an influential figure.
This trailer talk would be incomplete without mentioning about Vijay Raaz who’ll be seen essaying the role of Razia Bai a transgender woman and one of the biggest enemy of Gangu. He looks so terrific and just adds up on a reason to watch this film.
The trailer ends with a dialogue that sums up Gangubai’s personality and being a woman you just can’t stop yourself from standing up and whistling for her, “Arey jab Shakti, Sampatti, Sadbuddhi ye teeno hi auratein hain, toh in mardo ko kis baat ka guroor?”Â
Helmed by ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film also stars Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Shantanu Maheshwari, Jim Sarbh in pivotal supporting roles.
Though the trailer began with people shouting ‘Gangubai Murdabad’ but as an audience we cannot back ourselves from saying Gangubai Zindabaad!!
Produced by Bhansali Productions in collaboration with Jayantilal Gada’s Pen India Limited, the film is all set to release on 25th February, 2022 in the cinemas near you.Â
