The fourth part of the enigmatic show ‘Money Heist’ concluded with Lisbon safely entering the Reserve of Bank of Spain while the Professor (Álvaro Morte) was captured by Inspector Alicia Sierra with no evident way out of it. As the gang reunited and mourned Nairobi’s death, the professor was shocked to find a gun pointing at him. This was the cliffhanger we were left at almost 17 months ago.
Money Heist Part 5 Volume 1 released on September 3rd, 2021, and no one has been able to keep calm in anticipation of this mind blowing series. When I say mind blowing, I mean literally mind blowing. The first episode begins with Alicia (Najwa Nimri) threatening the Professor, followed by the famous opening credits track ‘My Life is Going On’ & this sets the mood for the 5 episodes to unfold. Seeing Berlin’s (Pedro Alonso) son, Rafael (Patrick Criado), with him in Paris allows us to see Berlin teach his son about his alleged profession as well as meeting his own girlfriend, Tatiana.
After Plan Paris is a success, the gang initiates Plan Rome which is led by the newest member in the gang, Lisbon. The most important thing for her was to get the processed gold out, even if it was less than what was planned. We also see that Alicia does not give empty threats, and that she is capable of doing anything. The Professor’s state in the first episode was miserable and helpless as he was bound by chains and hung off the rail by Alicia. Seeing the Professor apologize personally to everyone because he couldn’t guide them anymore left tears in my eyes. The look of hopelessness in Denver’s (Jaime Lorente) blu-coloured eyes was heart-wrenching. The journey they started in the red, right from the first part, was about to end very soon.
In his personal rivalry with Denver, Arturo (Enrique Arce) managed to create a revolt right under the gang’s noses, shooting him in the hand. All the characters in this series have different arcs across the five episodes and the entire series in general.
Raquel (Itziar Ituño), or should I call her Mrs. Professor a la Tokyo or maybe “the sexiest woman alive” a la The Professor, left no stone unturned even in the absence of the Professor & led the gang like a true leader in command. Her every step was calculated and quick-witted. Stockholm (Esther Acebo) commits something that her conscience cannot bear, causing her to enter a trance and feel guilty towards herself.
It is only a matter of time before Alicia realizes she has been betrayed by her coworkers, and viewers might be shocked to see her change. The third episode is titled ‘Welcome to the Spectacle of Life’, and we see the title come to life, but that is something you have to witness for yourself.
Despite being on the outside, the police are preparing for a merciless invasion led by the ruthless Captain Sagasta (José Manuel Seda). He has led inhumane missions in countries like Yemen, with no compassion for the hostages. One of the best dialogues in this episode is when Palermo explains to his gang that they will lose the war but at a slow pace, as they always have been considering themselves the ‘dregs of society’. Both the gang and the police are preparing to destroy each other. Helsinki (Darko Perić) proved to be a faithful Serbian soldier to the end and the bond between him and Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna) was unbreakable.
Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) has had the most remarkable arc throughout the series, especially in this part. She is shown to reminisce about her deceased boyfriend, Rene (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), a lot while also flirting with Rio (Miguel Herrán) and trying to fix things with him. She is one fearless girl and she has got nothing to lose. The viewers will be spectators of a real war in the final two episodes of Money heist as each side tries to save their own.
The director, Álex Pina, has tried to focus on the journey of every character individually and as a part of the family. This group of the world’s biggest losers are out there fighting for their lives, every second of the show, trying to save themselves and their group members out of love for each other. It was hard for me not to empathize with Palermo’s description of losers including trans, criminals, gays, Balkans, and Latinos who have lost everything in their lives and this is just another day for them.
The Professor is a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, as he assists Alicia in an impossible situation that may have led to her changing her mind, showing that he is a pure and kind man, whose only mission in life is to do right by his own self and his red-jumper family.
The background score on the five episodes is so well thought out that one can feel the emotions of the episode just by listening to the music.
Honestly, watching the five episodes has been an emotional rollercoaster for me and I still cannot fathom the end of it. The last few seconds of the final episode ends with the Professor shown trembling in the washroom with tears in his eyes. Three months more until this journey ends forever, leaving behind a bank sized hole in our hearts.
Money Heist Part 5 Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
