Ankahi Kahaniya is another project out of Netflix’s anthology department, this time with three directors on board – Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Abhishek Chaubey and Saket Chaudhary. Though coming hot on the heels of some other anthologies Netflix has released in recent times, this one looks and feels different.
The trailer promises us three unique stories all centred on and around love & longing.
According to a statement by Netflix itself, Iyer Tiwari’s short film will blur “the lines between reality and fantasy”. With Abhishek Banerjee in the lead, it’s a tale of a lonely man made lonelier by Mumbai’s crude conditions who ties emotions with a mannequin, expecting it to fill the void of a lover. The story is compelling because it rides on what most of the people do face in a big city like Mumbai – alienation & loneliness.
Abhishek Chaubey’s story is set in the 80s Bombay, based on the Kannada Story ‘Madhyantara’ by Jayant Kaikini. ‘Sairat’ actor Rajguru and Delzad Hiwale are in the lead roles in this short film. It’s a love story set in the times when single screen theatres existed. To quote Chaubey on his upcoming film, “When you’re young and caged in Mumbai, looking for love’s a sweet escape. And what’s better than finding it at the movies, however fleetingly? This one’s especially close to my heart. And I’m really excited for everyone to watch it.”
Saket Chaudhary’s short film features Kunal Kapoor, Zoya Hussain, Nikhil Dwivedi and Palomi with the story penned by Zeenat Lakhani and Chaudhary himself. The only film out of the 3 that doesn’t give away much but hints at the dilemma of ending marriages as Kapoor and Hussain try & deal with their sinking bond.
The anthology is produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies and Ashi Dua Sara. Ankahi Kahaniya streams on Netflix from 17th September, 2021. Catch the trailer here –
