The trailer for “Babylon”, hosting an old Hollywood period piece with the most vintage bash is out now. A big-budget project from the writer and director, Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash”, “La La Land”) Babylon” is a sweeping ode to the rise of talkies. The two-and-a-half minute trailer casts the glorious Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt a second time after their previous onscreen appearance in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in 2019. The trailer stars Robbie as the aspiring actress, Nellie LaRoy, who is here with stars in her eyes and insanity in her words.

Chazelle has a vast guild full of many current stars to slot in to play all the Hollywood luminaries of old. “Babylon” is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by an ensemble cast including Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. The trailer jizzles with glory and glitter throughout. The colour palette is largely made of rich shades of black, white and golden whilst being big with life and of course- jazz.

The trailer speaks in volumes of the making, the performances and the might of the movie and very less of the story –as it should be. The editing department should be applauded for one of the most well-put trailers in recent memory, which has excellent transitions between scenes. It hops visually from frame to frame while Nellie’s character is heard commenting and talking all at once. One scene that stands out is an insane moment where Nellie in all her madness and intoxication asks rhetorically who wants to see her fight a snake. It is equally hilarious and perfectly splendid.

“Babylon” is promising in more ways than one. With a massively talented star cast who seems to be delivering performances that are larger than life, Babylon seems to be a plot held on the shoulders of this fabulous team. With the vision of Chazelle who has been working on Babylon for a long time, the audience is looking forward to it with equal shine.

“Babylon” will be released worldwide on January 6, 2023.
