There is something special about Ali Abbas Zafar’s filmography. Since his debut with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011), none of his films have been mediocre or unlikable for the mass audience. Zafar has honed the skill of directing spy action-thrillers and drama over his 12-year-long career with back-to-back hits such as Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), Bharat (2019) and one the most controversial Amazon Prime web series Tandav (2021).
The trailer of Zafar’s upcoming “Bloody Daddy” dropped on Youtube recently after which it was also shown during the second qualifier match of the 2023 IPL. Adapted from the French film Sleepless Night (2011) by Frederic Jardin, this upcoming action-thriller stars Shahid Kapoor, Diana Penty, Sanjay Kapoor and Ronit Roy.
The trailer opens with Shahid making his entrance into a dark hotel hallway, dressed in a black suit. His voiceover sets the stage, saying, “Ye meri us raat ki kahani hai where things got really f–ked up (This is the story of that night where things got really f–ked up).” The scene transitions to twelve hours earlier, when Shahid’s character receives a phone call from Ronit Roy, who instructs him to retrieve a bag of cocaine without causing unnecessary complications. The trailer then cuts back to the present as Shahid enters a hotel, determined to uncover the bag’s whereabouts and retrieve it.
There is a lot of blood and action with a tinge of mystery that the trailer gives us details to make us more curious about the film. There is an action scene at a kitchen that might also remind you of Priyanka Chopra’s own action scene in the recently-released “Citadel” on Amazon Prime.
Shahid Kapoor plays an NCB officer in this french adaptation, which is one of the challenging roles for him over his 20-year-long career. We have seen him play a rom-com hero, but it was Udta Punjab (2017) that became a game changer in his filmography. Since then, Kapoor has been seen playing uniquely grey roles as we have grown more appreciative of this versatility in him.
Bloody Daddy is scheduled to be released on 9th June, 2023 on Jio Cinema.
