The current atmosphere of unrest, and the deplorable conditions for the women in India have left us speechless. A lot has been said, a lot has been done too. A lot of solutions have been brought up. But the easiest and most efficient solution, thus far, is to educate the masses; to start a dialogue. That is what Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak intends to do.
The media is an incredibly powerful tool to sway the masses. Based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, Chhapaak stars Deepika Padukone as the protagonist with actor Vikrant Massey. Gulzar had reportedly stated that Chhapaak is not a biopic, but about a larger issue.
The trailer takes us through the harrowing account of Malti, a woman whose face and ultimately her entire life is ravaged by an acid attack. Or, shall we say, the egoistic motivations of a maniac; the ultimate representation of toxic masculinity. The horrors seems to have no end, as she is seen breaking apart over and over again. The pain and suffering exacerbated by the inefficiency of police force and victim blaming mentality. It’s a social commentary – a stark one at that. The dialogues each represent a strong force of dissent. Stuck in the bureaucratic mill, tossed around from court to court and put to trial by the forces of media, we’re taken through a brief view of the experiences of an ultimate social evil. Deepika has seemingly done a brilliant role as Malti, and has left no stone unturned to make her character as raw as possible.
Chhapaak will come to a theater near you on January 10th, 2020.
