In the trailer of ‘Farzi’, the fine line between real and forged currency is blurred. And it’s Shahid Kapoor who blurs this line while Vijay Sethupathi must bring an end to his notorious run at minting fake Indian rupee notes.

“Mujhe itna paisa kamana hai, ki mujhe uski izzat hi nahi karni pade”, says Sunny (Shahid Kapoor) as the trailer for Raj & DK’s ‘Farzi’ opens. That dialogue alone shows you the bend in Sunny’s mind. He’s a self-proclaimed artist, who can make a copy of practically anything he lays his hands on. You know, the kind who commit robberies and forgeries to such perfection, that even the lawmakers acknowledge their brilliance? That’s what Shahid Kapoor’s character precisely is. And such brilliance in crime always draws a cop, who’s played here by Vijay Sethupathi. Michael is unorthodox to say the least, not shying away from bribing people for crucial information and shooting them in the foot when they don’t comply.

Although a criminal, Sunny’s actions stem from the exploitation of the middle-class and disgust for the system established and run solely by the rich to serve their own profits. He’s noted saying, “Hum log middle-class nahi hain, hum log middle-finger class hain.” He observes how the poor spend their lives repaying debts while the rich gorge on the loan interests. His rage taken too far and actions too drastic, he frames his deeds as revolutionary, who’s brining a “kraanti”.

Although not much is revealed of Kay Kay Menon’s character but he’s got that shrewd businessman aura going on for him, who believes in extreme measures to break through the odds for success.

If you’ve watched Kapoor’s Badmaash Company (2010), you’re bound to draw parallels between the two with respect to Kapoor’s characters. But ‘Farzi’ appears much more balanced, a wholly different, magnetic piece of work altogether. It’s a cat-and-mouse story, where Sunny and Michael lock horns and blood is bound to be spilled.

‘Farzi’ has a script co-written by Sita R Menon, Suman Kumar and Hussain Dalal. The series also features Raashii Khanna, Chittranjan Giri, Jaswant Singh Dalal, Amol Palekar, Regina Cassandra, Zakir Hussain, Kubbra Sait and Bhuvan Arora in pivotal roles.

‘Farzi’ releases on February 10 on Prime Video.
