Writing a masale-daar comedy film is a very difficult skill. And it was mostly developed and mastered here in Bollywood itself by the likes of Priyadarshan, David Dhawan and the trending Vasan Bala, if we’re taking names.
Bollywood is resurfacing on the shores of comedy. It might be arriving panting, out of breath and lean, but it is atleast making the journey.
‘Govinda Naam Mera’, checks every box that is found in a Dharma Production or for that say, any big budget production film. It stars three big names, Vicky Kaushal as the titular character, Bhumi Pednekar as Gauri-the twisted wife of Govinda and Kiara Advani as Suku-the partner-in-crime with Govinda.
Govinda is a choreographer who is perceived as a good-for-nothing man by his wife. She kicks him, taunts him and provokes him. And Govinda carries on with it. He hangs out with his wife’s boyfriend and takes all the insult. But one night, Govinda has had it and he holds a gun to Gauri, who to his surprise is not the least bit scared because she doesn’t see him as the man who could pull the trigger. As things progress in the trailer, a murder takes place and Govinda & Suku seem to have done it.
That’s pretty much precisely what you learn from the trailer. There’s ample quirkiness as for Vicky’s character, well let’s just say he is not the brightest mind, so his shortcomings are funny. For the world might perceive Govinda as a loser who gets tired of being kicked around but the hope is that the screenplay will have much more to say about Govinda than just that.
If you’ve watched the recent releases, ‘Darlings’ or ‘Monica O My Darling’, you are bound to draw parallels, as although characters and situations differ, the crux and flavour of comedy tends to invoke similar giggles and chuckles.
Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Govinda Naam Mera is directed by Shashank Khaitan, who has previously directed films like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Dhadak. Govinda Naam Mera will be releasing on Disney+ Hotstar on December 16.
