Medical Science is such an intriguing subject for all of us, and especially for the laymen i.e who’s only association comes alive when one seeks treatment. We always try to know more and more about our bodies and the drugs which are used to treat them. This curiosity is the reason why such stories, depicting tales of medicine and the medical world are received with open arms. Human is one such series starring Shefali Shah and Kirti Kulhari that explores mainly the topic of Human Trials of Drugs(Medicines) and the positive and negative aspects of it. The series is studded with talented actors namely Seema Biswas, Ram Kapoor, Vishal Jethwa, Atul Kumar, Sushil Pandey, Aasif Khan, Shruthi, Riddhi, Pranali, and Mohan Agashe.
The trailer opens with a voice-over, explaining a scheme like structure. He(The Voice) says “Before a new medicine comes to market, it is tested on humans to know if it is working properly or not” and then this amateur, country and the nescient sounding voice says “More subjects equals more money”. Every experiment has just 2 probabilities: One to succeed and another to fail, but when the subject is a human the failure costs a lot. Shefali Shah aka Dr. Gauri Nath is introduced as a selfless hero of society. She runs a hospital called Mantha and seems very dedicated and reputed in her field. Then we meet Kirti aka Gauri’s ‘best find’, Saira Sabbarwal. They both are committed to creating history. They want to give the world a drug called S93R, a new drug for heart disease, which they choose to call ‘The Savior’. They start their human trials and Vishal Jethwa seems to be playing the middleman who brings in people to furnish Human Trials.
The trials seem to be going wrong with the drug affecting people negatively. People are losing their lives, succumbing to disorders. The trailer paints a very dark and dramatic theme but the attempt is to make it realistic too. This idea, of how people, especially in a country like ours give consent to be the rat equivalent to these medicinal experiments gives one chills. Are they aware of all possible consequences? That’s a gray area and this series looks promising in feeding all our curiosities.
The show’s official synopsis reads, “A pharma giant is using India’s lax clinical trial rules to fast track the development of a new drug, despite lethal side effects. Meanwhile, 35-year-old Dr Saira Sabharwal lands a dream job in Bhopal’s premier hospital under the mentorship of the iconic 45-year-old Dr Gauri Nath. Saira grows under Gauri’s tutelage and as the two women start to form a deep bond over their commitment to the medical cause. However, a shocking discovery throws their life into chaos as their story becomes intertwined with that of a young migrant worker, Mangu, who is all set to wreak havoc on the medical system.”
