DC fans, get ready to get all riled up, because the teaser trailer of Joker is here! To be released on October 4th, 2019, this Joker spin off directed by Todd Phillips, (who is best known for movies like the Hangover Trilogy and Due Date) seems set on redefining Joker’s story as a villain. Played by the intense and vivacious Joaquin Phoenix, Joker brings you, for the very first time, the villain without his arch enemy, Batman, in a constant tug of war between good and evil. What seems to be the ‘origin story’ of Joker, this trailer gives us a peek into the pre-Joker, a ‘normal’ guy of the name Arthur, with ordinary aspirations and issues who is faced with scarring, torturous incidents that begin his irreversible descent into madness.
The hauntingly eerie background music, the disturbing vibe and the distaste in your mouth are all the perfect makings of a Joker spin off. The teaser opens to a disconcertingly genuine smile on Arthur’s face while in a session with his therapist. Taking care of his mother, trying to make it as a comedian and working on his jokes next to a bottle of prescribed pills convey that he was already on edge. The pathos, his helplessness at being dastardly bullied at various instances in a 1980s Gotham City that is ‘getting crazier out there’ unfold a depressively brutal series of ordeals that shape him into who he becomes. Looks like the Bat and his nemesis do have a lot in common after all. The trailer also gives a glimpse of a strikingly handsome Robert De Niro in a power blue suit as a famed personality (does this man even age?) out of whose show Arthur is unceremoniously removed and Zazie Beetz, who appears to spark a romantic interest in the erstwhile Arthur, revealing a shockingly human side to the Joker. The trailer ends with a deformed Arthur transgressing into the Joker as we know him, who shows off his insanity proudly with his painted, deranged smile and signature green hair, more himself than he ever was.
Joaquin Phoenix wears his lunacy like skin on screen and we can’t wait to watch his power-packed performance. He certainly gives a tough competition to the consummate portrayal by Heath Ledger, everyone’s favourite Joker to date. In what seems to be a long wait since Suicide Squad, the DC fandom will finally get to see the Joker again, and all comparisons of Joaquin Phoenix with Heath Ledger aside, this teaser will make you crave for the movie as badly as the Joker craves to put on his insanity. DC community, prepare yourselves to smile and put on a happy face!
