Everything can be turned into art. Even the simplest of close-up shots. With a colour palette that inspires awe, the teaser for Navarasa, the grand nine-part anthology soon to stream on Netflix, leaves you wanting for more.
In the 2 and a half minute long teaser, you’re thrown into a whirlpool of close-up expressions as the long list of actors starring in this anthology depict the nine rasa or emotions defined in Indian art.
It seems like each episode shall centre around one of the nine rasas, namely anger, compassion, courage, disgust, fear, laughter, love, peace and wonder.
Produced by Mani Ratnam, in collaboration with Jayendra Panchapakesan, Navarasa marks the the digital debut for Mani Ratnam and his production company Madras Talkies. The film stars an array of actors like Arvind Swamy, Revathi, Suriya, Vijay Sethupathi, Prakash Raj, Siddharth, Nithya Menen, Parvathy Thiruvothu among others. The music for the different stories has been composed by different artists including AR Rahman, D Imman, Ghibran, Arul Dev and Karthik with cinema’s greats like Santosh Sivan also associated with the project.
The artists, technicians and directors of this anthology are contributing towards the film without remuneration and the profits earned from the project will be donated to the members of the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI), who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The nine episodes are directed by nine prolific directors, each a master of their own craft, namely Arvind Swami who makes his directorial debut with this venture, Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Halitha Shameem, Priyadarshan, Karthick Naren, Karthik Subbaraj, Vasanth and Rathindran R. Prasad.
