The first thing that crops up in your mind when you watch the Sherni trailer is the atmosphere of power that surrounds the upcoming movie.

The metaphorical tigress becomes the motif of the film that seems to tackle multiple issues ranging from equality between men and women to the coexistence between the animal world and the human one. There is a distinct observation which strikes you, and that is how there is a real tigress that’s bothering the villagers who inhabit the areas around the jungle, and then there is Vidya Balan’s character, a metaphorical tigress making her way in this jungle-like man’s world (quite literally).

A glance onto the trailer and it’s visible that Sherni has a layered story and performances by some brilliant actors like Vidya Balan, Vijay Raaz, Neeraj Kabi, Sharat Saxena and more.

The film follows the life of a forest officer (Vidya Balan) who comes to a village to track down a tiger on the loose, but the tiger is the least of her concerns as she is surrounded by constant patriarchy that doesn’t accept her in a job that hasn’t seen many women. There is a constant juxtaposition between the jungle and the so called civilised world which does not behave much better. There’s also a constant comparison between the beast that’s on loose, and the beast that humans themselves foster.

Sherni is an intricately woven story that wishes to tackle several subjects at once, not in a preachy tone but rather narratively.

The trailer is impactful, powerful and intriguing making for the sheer brilliance that is to be expected from a Vidya Balan movie, as well as an Amit Masurkar directorial, known for the much acclaimed Newton. Sherni is slated to release on 18th June on Amazon Prime.
