The trailer for the Kapoor father-son duo of Anil Kapoor and Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor starrer “Thar” released on Netflix today much to the delight of fans. “Thar” which is said to be inspired by noir and western genres is a revenge thriller set in 1980s.
The trailer for the same opens with Anil Kapoor, who’s playing the role of police officer Surekha Singh, trying to investigate a gruesome murder in the barren desert. And soon it moves to the next frame where we see Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor knocking at Fatima Sana Shaikh’s door who’s the local girl in the village. Harsh will be seen essaying the role of an antique dealer, who has come to the village, searching for a girl named Panna. His character seems a little too mysterious and we are left wondering about his intentions.
The trailer isn’t heavy on dialogues and neither does it give away too much. But it looks the part as the perfect Indian Western drama with chasings, killings, dacoits riding horses, all set in a harsh and dry desert. The colors are almost all different shades of the desert, from the costumes to the houses. Shotguns are fired, hawks screech and you turn thirsty just looking at the visuals of the desert.
To add up to our curiosity, the trailer ends with Anil Kapoor’s character saying, “Lekin pata nahi mujhe kyu lagta hai ye picture Gabbar ke baare mein nahi hai. Ho sakta hai ye sab kuch Thakur ne kiya ho, ya fir Jai aur Veeru, ya kya pata Basanti?”, convincing us to even look at Fatima’s character suspiciously.
The trailer is two minutes long but it has been cut so perfectly that nothing is revealed about the storyline – right from the first frame to the last one you just keep guessing, but you can’t make any conclusions. The background score composed by Ajay Jayanthi and the cinematography by Shreya Dev Dube is arguably the best thing that comes out of the trailer. It keeps us intrigued and excited throughout.
“Thar” marks the second collaboration between Anil Kapoor and his son Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor. The duo earlier worked together in Netflix’s “AK vs AK”, where Harsh made a cameo. And no doubt it’s going to be fun to watch the two of them together in full fledged roles for the first time. The film also stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Akshay Oberoi, Mukti Mohan and Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles.
The trailer’s official synopsis reads, “Thar follows antique dealer Siddharth’s journey through a remote village in Rajasthan that has recently been rocked by a series of violent killings. As the local cop Surekha Singh investigates these killings, he crosses paths with Siddharth. Will that encounter be the only one?”
The film is directed and written by Raj Singh Chaudhary, who’s also making his debut as a director whereas the dialogues are written by Anurag Kashyap. Produced by Anil Kapoor’s Anil Kapoor Film Company (AKFC) , the movie is all set to release on Netflix on 6th May, 2022.
