The trailer of the upcoming historical drama series ‘The Empire’, based on the book ‘Empire of the Moghul’ by Alex Rutherford, released today & while the scale is staggering, even by movie standards forget web series, there are way too many aspects that seem highly “inspired”. For instance, the scene where Kunal Kapoor is wearing the crown looks exactly like the one in Padmaavat while the costumes will remind you of Game Of Thrones – from a Jon Snow inspired fur coat to the Dothraki get up! And just when you think that it is only the costumes, you see the army entering the city with snow falling in the backdrop & suddenly you will be reminded of Winterfell while the battle scenes are bound to remind you of the Battle of Bastards!

The eight episode series follows the story of the Mughal emperor Babur – from the valley of Ferghana to Samarkand and beyond. Kunal Kapoor will be making his digital debut as Babur with an ensemble cast which includes names like Shabana Azmi as Esan Daulat, Drashti Dhami as Khanzada Begum, Dino Morea as Shaibani Khan, Aditya Seal as Humayun and Rahul Dev as Wazir Khan.

The web series is about Babur, whose father, the King of Ferghana, dies in an accident. The trailer shows a few glimpses of Babur taking up his father’s kingdom as he battles their enemies & also the sacrifice made by Khanzada Begum to protect their kingdom. The trailer also hints at Babur’s plan to cross the Sindhu to fight the Lodi dynasty, which would eventually mark the onset of the Mughal era in India’s history.

The Empire is said to be India’s biggest budgeted web series. With grand sets, the shooting locales range from India to Uzbekistan.

After watching the trailer, I have mixed feelings. I hope that the show itself has more originality and makes use of the talent  & the massive budget it has clearly been allotted along with the rich storyline that an Emperor like Babur and a dynasty like the Mughals can boast of without needing inspirations from anywhere.

This series has been created by Nikkhil Advani with Mitakshara Kumar in the director’s seat. She has been an assistant director in Bajirao Mastani & an associate director in Padmaavat.

The Empire will release on Disney+ Hotstar on August 27th, 2021.
