Is there anyone who’s contributed more to increasingly shrinking niche space of Bollywood in the past few decades more than the Bhardwaj family? Music composer- filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has been injecting some of his most striking visual cues and narrative beats into different genres for a while now. It’s not even been a while since the hype surrounding his upcoming Netflix movie named “Khufiya” got everyone talking, and now we already have the first trailer for next year’s “Kuttey” out on YouTube.
The film marks the directorial debut of Aasmaan Bhardwaj, the acclaimed and respected filmmaker’s son. This latest thriller also stars Tabu, who is also set to take the front stage in Netflix’s “Khufiya”. Although this time around, there’s an A- list of actors starring right next to her. The 2 minute 43 second trailer shows all of the characters out for themselves as they try and capture a van loaded with money. It features an ensemble cast of actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Tabu, Arjun Kapoor, Konkona Sensharma, Radhika Madan, Kumud Mishra and even Shardul Bhardwaj. It’s been a while since a heist looked this good in a Hindi film. And if there’s anything that the Bhardwajs’ have previously proven with their renowned films, is that it’s a theme that was made for them to bring to visual fruition. The tone and vibe of the Aasmaan Bhardwaj’s film looks just right, perfectly extracting just the right amount of emotional weight from each of its talented cast members. In a recent interview during the film’s trailer launch, Tabu was quoted saying “This character was written for a male, but Aasmaan and Vishal ji changed it for me. Aasman has grown up in front of me.”
The trailer opens as the main cast has guns pointed out on Arjun Kapoor. He then asks them to lower them down on his count, but he seems to be the only one to do so. Through a quirky and flashy sequence, we then get an introduction to all the crooked members of the gang. We get a sense that Arjun and Kumud have been working together, and Naseeruddin’s character even promises them a good sale of illegal weapons. Tabu is shown to be a badass police officer (yes, again!) while Radika Madan is a bride on a run, who seeks to run away with her lover, played by Shardul. Konkana continues her streak of playing complex and morally grey strong female characters. Film lovers, meanwhile, couldn’t be more delighted.
One of the best aspects of the trailer, however, is how in nearly three-minutes, it neatly breaks itself into three-acts, just like the three-act structure act of a screenplay. It keeps building momentum, and ends with showing us what happens when the gang collides in this heist thriller. Thus, the fast-paced trailer is filled with overtones of dark humour, insulting curses, and of course, lots of action. Produced under the banner of Luv Films, Vishal Bhardwaj Films, as well as Gulshan Kumar and Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, “Kuttey” is set to release in theatres across the country on January 13, 2023.
