The trailer of the upcoming sports drama King Richard, starring the two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith, has been released & it seems to be very different from typical biographical films. Usually whenever a biopic is made, it is created with the basic idea of emphasising and highlighting the struggle of the main character/s, but here its the force behind the ‘main’ characters who is in focus. We witness Richard Williams (Will Smith) redefining the whole concept of parenting by training & putting in his all to give the world two extraordinarily talented athletes – Serena Williams (Demi Singleton) & Venus Williams (Saniyya Sidney).

In the 2 minutes and 44 seconds long trailer, we see the emotional & uplifting story of a doting but determined father who wishes to see his talented daughters conquer the world.

“I wrote a 78-page plan for their whole career before they were even born,” says Richard as he directs the success of his daughters. When a character says that Richard may have a Michael Jordan on his hands, he enthusiastically replies, “I have two!”

Richard has had a few major setbacks in his own life but he doesn’t want the same for his girls, “This world ain’t never had no respect for Richard Williams,” says Smith’s character in one scene, “But they’re going to respect y’all.”

The film has an amazing ensemble cast with Aunjanue Ellis as Oracene “Brandy” Williams, Tony Goldwyn as coach Paul Cohen and Jon Bernthal as coach Rick Macci. The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green with screenplay by Zack Baylin & the music has been composed by Kris Bowers.

In one scene, Richard tells his daughters, “You’re going to be representing every little Black girl on earth” and boy did they live up to that statement! Both Serena and Venus Williams have had an incredible career trajectory running over for almost two decades & still counting. With 30 Grand Slam Titles and 122 singles titles between them, they are also Olympic gold medallists.

King Richard is scheduled to be released in the US in theatres, with simultaneous streaming on HBO max, on 19th November 2021. No date regarding the film’s release in India has been announced yet.
