The trailer for Mai, the new Netflix original, was dropped on Thursday. Starring Sakshi Tanwar, Raima Sen and Wamiqa Gabbi, it looks very interesting and engaging. Mai means ‘mother’, and it is a story of a mother on a journey of finding the truth of her daughter’s death. And possibly, even take revenge in the name of justice.

The trailer in the first few seconds establishes the death of Sheel’s (Sakshi Tanwar) daughter, Supriya (Wamiqa Gabbi). Supriya appears goosey and disturbed as her mother asks her if something’s wrong. As Supriya says, in sign language, “Something’s happened, mom. I love you.”, she is run over by a truck right in front of Sheel. What looks like an accident, surely isn’t. Supriya was about to break down and let everything out but that was obstructed by someone who didn’t want the truth out in the open.

Then the trailer starts unfolding some facts about her troubled daughter. A man, presumably the truck driver, asks for forgiveness from Sheel, outside the court premises, “Please forgive me, I never meant to do that.” With this statement, Sheel starts doubting every presented fact and situation. And it’s from this point onwards that Sheel’s transformation begins.

A mother who takes on the entire world to avenge her child’s death is not a first-time subject brought onto the screen. Frances McDormand’s, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri comes to mind. But a good story no matter how many times told, will always work, given the craft and portrayals are top-notch. And Mai’s trailer certainly looks the part. The cinematography presents a world tinted in yellow, bringing gloominess; Sakshi Tanwar appears looted and restless throughout after her daughter’s death; and it is difficult to spot a clichĂ© in the trailer, which is a good thing. The trailer is cut so smartly that you don’t really understand anything besides the death of Supriya and her mother’s quest for justice. Other than that everything just gives you questions, intrigues your mind to think and creates interest amongst the audiences. It gives you many ideas and many new variables to conclude from.

With the extremely talented Sakshi Tanwar in the lead, this film is something to look forward to. Others in the cast include Vivek Mushran, Anant Vidhaat, Ankur Ratan, Prashant Narayan, Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Seema Pahwa. With a very crisp trailer and a seemingly tight screenplay, Mai is directed by Anshai Lal and Atul Mongia, and produced by Anushka Sharma, Karnesh Sharma and Atul Mongia. Mai premieres exclusively on Netflix on 15th April.
