Directed by Ajay Devgn, ‘Runway 34’ becomes his 4th directorial and is a different concept altogether. The story is literally above ground, in a flight, somewhere in the sky and it looks quite engaging. Produced by Ajay Devgn Films along with several other co-producers including Kumar Mangat Pathak, Vikrant Sharma, Sandeep Harish Kewlani, Tarlok Singh Jethi, Hasnain Husaini and Jay Kanujia, ‘Runway 34’ is all set to release on Eid, 2022.

The movie is based on true events, inspired by the Jet Airways Doha-Kochi flight incident, 2015. The main cast includes Ajay Devgn as Captain Vikrant Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan as Narayan Vedant and Rakul Preet Singh in the role of a co-pilot, among others. It starts on a lighter note in the restroom, where Captain Vikrant Khanna is forbidden to light up his cigarette. With one glance, we can see how blunt the captain is. Soon, we witness the co-pilot(Rakul Preet) joining Captain Khanna for a flight, who is filled with enthusiasm and respect for him.

Everything looks fine when people are settling into their seats and putting their bags away. The flight eventually takes off post the request for clearance has been granted. This is where the aircraft catches trouble and the plot of the movie comes to light. In this second, everything changes and that is very well supported by the suspenseful background music, which creates a sense of fear and uncertainty. The aircraft is seen to lose balance and get out of control of the pilots, while people and bags are seen flying out of place.

The trailer is slightly confusing as it keeps showing flashbacks of that aircraft incident from the past as well as the present case going on, with Captain Vikrant involved. With the looks of the trailer, Captain does look like a trustworthy person who won’t leave the people in a difficult time, but the incident says otherwise. It is a question on his judgment as he is attempting to land the aircraft in an area previously denied. One minute into the trailer we hear a very familiar voice, and we’re introduced to none other than Amitabh Bachchan as Narayan Vedant, the investigation officer.

Bachchan sir’s entry is mind-blowing and the dialogue with which he enters is a heavy one. It is about how one can deal with committed mistakes in three ways – to accept the mistake, to learn from it or to repeat the mistake again. Scenes jump from the inside of a turbulent aircraft to a court-room setting, to investigative location trips, giving the audience’s eyes less time to settle and register.

The movie is loaded with brilliant and captivating dialogues, only increasing the impact of the scenes on the audiences. Narayan Vedant is here to investigate and teach Captain a lesson of accepting his mistakes but the end of the trailer takes us in some other direction. The truth seems to be hidden and only the movie can help us understand the case better. The cast of this movie is rock solid as both the antagonist and protagonist feel like equal competitors. Devgn as Captain Vikrant Khanna looks calm and a rule-breaker but witty at the same time. Big B as Narayan Vedant seems powerful and adamant on proving something (which might or might not be there). Boman Irani also has a part to play in this movie and he’s ofcourse a welcomed addition to the cast.

Although the trailer is haphazard in its selection of shots and seems like a rough, hurried assembly of important scenes, it goes to and fro throughout, not giving a rather clear idea of what is going to take place. What one can count on is the proven mettle of the cast, a relatively lesser known true incident and the factor of suspense which many hope will prevent any film from a nose-dive crash.
