It feels like he never left. As you see him sitting next to a bonfire in the desert, as you hear that distinct voice and look into those eyes now governed by wrinkles, a tsunami rises in the desert, of memories of Irrfan.

“The Song of Scorpions”, like The Hollywood Reporter aptly puts, is beautiful to look at. Directed by Anup Singh, it stars Golshiften Farahani as Nooran, who treats those bitten by scorpions with a song. And on the opposite end we have Irrfan playing a camel dealer, Aadam, who falls in love with Nooran.

The first thing that hits you, after Irrfan’s eyes, is the background score. Set in the Thar desert, the sound of the film is almost of Shakespearen proportions, reeking of a tragedy that’s hidden under the sheets of sand. Aadam’s smitten by Nooran, by her beauty and her singing. As Nooran travels far and wide healing others, she reciprocates his feelings, but something ominous looms holding her back.

The film is not a light, sun-soaked fairy tale. Instead it’s an intense, high-stakes drama in the desert. The trailer is cut so well, it gives you the impression of a storm coming, in terms of emotions that will engulf Aadam and Nooran on this thumping journey.

Produced by Zeeshan Ahmad, the film also stars Waheeda Rahman, Shashank Arora, and Tillotama Shome. “The Song of Scorpions” will release in theatres on April 28th a day before Irrfan’s third death anniversary.
