From the makers of Andhadhun, in their own opening words; “Hold your hearts and await the thrilling Miss Monica and her adventures.” Monica, O My Darling’s two-and-a-half minutes trailer is set against the backdrop of the old hindi song, Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja. Directed by Vasan Bala, the dark comedy drama features Rajkummar Rao, Radhika Apte, Huma Qureshi and Sikander Kher in the lead roles.
Without giving away much, the trailer unfolds beautifully. The trailer shows a perhaps innocent Rajkummar Rao who has fallen into corrupt troubles due to his lady love, which further envelops more and more people through the story. All the characters seem to have an interesting stance, a reason to exist in the plot and a very unique perspective which is easily understood even in the short trailer. The darkness is prominent even in the frames. Most scenes are shot in dimly lit rooms or at night time. A comical twist is expected as throughout the trailer we see people either flabbergasted, troubled, insane or just simply hilarious. The makers have already set their bar too high and we can only hope they deliver upto the mark.
Rajkummar Rao is one of the greatest Bollywood actors performing right now. With the rest of cast which is equally capable, this film can do wonders on screen. Huma Qureshi’s negative role seems extremely strong and the vibe she gives off in the trailer is scary and tantalizing all at the same time. Radhika Apte’s introduction is with a hint of humour and excitement. The trailer gives major 90s vibes and we are all for it! Monica, O My Darling is a definite twist on the 90s male villains with a modern female villain who is making all the men around her pounce and kill (quiet literally).
This dark comedy revolves around yet another female antagonist (reference to Andhadhun) wherein Rao is caught in Huma Qureshi’s vicious web and is being blackmailed while everyone else is either forced to help him or investigate. A lot of expectations of this black comedy stand on the writing. Written by Yogesh Chandekar and produced by Matchbox Shots, Monica, O My Darling will only prove its worth if it lands the right punchlines, makes the right twists, and scares only enough to make it thrilling whilst having a clever storyline.
‘Monica, O My Darling’ will land on Netflix India this 11th November.
